At the instigation of the New York Herald Tribune and the Ladies' Home Journal, Robert Capa - "The greatest war photographer of them all" - and John Steinbeck author of Mice and Men, came together as a novel duo and spent three months in the Soviet Union. The director of the women's magazine warned American readers. "It is not a matter of photographing communism, but of showing that Russia is also a people".
